Seeking to capitalize on the number of cast off shipping container, the 99k House proposes to up cycle these containers to create an affordable and environmentally responsible house. Using three "high cube" containers, a gracious three bedroom home of 1,298 ft² with 9' ceilings can be made. The structure is raised to encourage natural air circulation. Rigid panel insulation mounted to interior faces insulate the house, while the ceramic heat-reflective paint covering the exterior and the “living roof” topping the container work to reduce heat gain with minimal upkeep.
